PITO recently welcomed Emilio de Miguel Calabia, Consul General of Spain in Guangzhou, and his delegation to its Intangible Cultural Heritage Blue-and-White Porcelain Cultural Center. The visit offered an opportunity to explore the history of Chaozhou blue-and-white porcelain, learn about traditional ceramic craftsmanship, and experience porcelain hand-painting.

Discovering the Heritage of Chaozhou Blue-and-White Porcelain

Accompanied by the PITO team, the delegation toured the cultural exhibition space and learned about the origins, craftsmanship, and continued development of Chaozhou blue-and-white porcelain.

Chaozhou has a long-standing ceramic tradition, and its porcelain has historically traveled overseas through maritime trade routes, contributing to commercial and cultural exchanges between China and other regions, including Europe.

During the visit, the delegation viewed a selection of blue-and-white porcelain pieces and distinctive ceramic works while learning about PITO’s ceramic-making heritage, which dates back to 1982. From traditional hand-painted decoration and firing techniques to contemporary product design and manufacturing, PITO continues to explore ways to bring traditional ceramic craftsmanship into modern applications.

This approach connects Chaozhou’s cultural heritage with contemporary design and the evolving needs of professional dining and hospitality environments.

The experience offered a closer look at the artistic techniques behind blue-and-white porcelain, from brushwork and pattern composition to the role of cobalt pigments and firing in creating its characteristic blue tones.

More than a decorative art form, blue-and-white porcelain reflects generations of craftsmanship, material knowledge, and artistic expression. The hands-on activity provided an engaging way to appreciate these traditions and demonstrated how cultural experiences can encourage dialogue across different backgrounds.
