Ceramic Mind Body Learning Therapy (2)

Am April 22, Die “Ceramic Mind Therapy” program was held at the PITO Intangible Heritage Chaozhou Blue-and-White Porcelain Cultural Center (Gongmei-Hafen, Bezirk Haizhu, Guangzhou).

This experiential program combined ceramic creation, cultural heritage immersion, and psychological awareness, using clay as a medium for self-expression and inner reflection. Through hands-on making and guided facilitation, participants were invited to reconnect with their emotional states in a calm, creative environment.

From Clay to Self: The Psychological Logic of Ceramic Expression

The opening session was led by Professor Qiu Hongzhong, consultant of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Ceramic Studio, who introduced “Basic Operational Guidelines for Ceramic Therapy Workshops.”

He explained ceramic therapy from a psychological perspective, highlighting a key idea:
clay is not just a material, but a metaphor for human emotional experience.

Just like clay, human emotions are fluid and transformable—able to be softened, reshaped, compressed, or permanently formed through experience.

This process of “continuous reshaping” mirrors how individuals process emotions, stress, and life experiences over time. It is precisely this parallel that makes ceramics a powerful medium for emotional awareness and self-reflection.

Hands-on Ceramic Practice: Returning to Sensory Awareness

Following the theoretical introduction, participants entered a guided hands-on session led by Tang Xiaoke, Director of the PITO Ceramic Art Workshop.

Through kneading, shaping, and building clay structures, participants experienced a process centered on touch, presence, and gradual immersion.

Without fixed outcomes or aesthetic pressure, the focus shifted from “making a perfect object” to “experiencing the process itself.” This allowed participants to slow down, observe their own reactions, and enter a more focused and grounded state.

The practice aligns with global trends in mindfulness-based creative experiences and stress-relief art activities, where making becomes a form of emotional regulation and self-awareness.

Blue-and-White Porcelain Painting: Bringing Heritage into Everyday Creation

In the afternoon session, participants engaged in blue-and-white porcelain painting, guided by Tan Xiaojun, PITO Brand Director and State Banquet Tableware Designer.

Drawing on her experience in high-level international design projects, she introduced the cultural and aesthetic foundations of traditional blue-and-white porcelain.

On plain ceramic surfaces, cobalt pigment gradually unfolded through each brushstroke, creating natural, flowing patterns. In this process, traditional craftsmanship shifted from observation to participation—turning cultural heritage into a tangible, personal creative experience.

Ceramic Mind-Body Practice: Creation as Emotional Integration

The final session was led by Associate Professor Li Yihe, a nationally certified Level II psychological counselor, who facilitated an immersive ceramic mind-body practice.

Participants were encouraged to create freely without predefined expectations. Some shaped vessels symbolizing protection and containment, while others expressed internal tension through abstract and irregular forms.

She emphasized that ceramic therapy is not about the finished artwork, but about the process itself:

Creation serves as a medium for emotional expression, awareness, and integration.

When emotions are given form through clay, they become visible, tangible, and ultimately more understandable—allowing inner experiences to be gently released and reorganized.

Creation as a Path to Inner Balance

Through the integration of ceramic practice, cultural experience, and psychological guidance, the program offered a meaningful approach to mind-body connection in contemporary life.

The transformability of clay reflects the human capacity for growth and change, while the creative process mirrors self-understanding and emotional integration.
